I believe a larger number of kids have played a video game than their parents, or their grandparents or great grandparents. The population of the planet is also larger than it was 50 years ago.
If the total number of gamers is increasing each year, then it follows the number of games sold will also increase.

Let's also not forget the stigma that survival horror games had in the early days. It wasn't until well into the 2000's that the genre started to become accepted as mainstream, which I recall was largely pioneered by Resident Evil 4. Nowadays the average gamer's interest in survival horror is much greater than in the original Playstation/N64 era.
